Rashid Abdulrahman Al Zayani

The head and most distinguished figure of the Al Zayani family. Rashid Abdulrahman Al Zayani was born in 1912 and played an important role in the political history of the Kingdom of Bahrain, as a member of the Constituent Assembly that drafted the constitution in 1973. He also served two consecutive terms in the Shura Council, and his charitable record is filled with good works across many fields.

His charitable work was crowned by the establishment of the Rashid Abdulrahman Al Zayani Charity Foundation, with a paid-up capital of half a million Bahraini dinars.

The late Rashid Al Zayani is considered one of the pioneers of commerce in the Kingdom of Bahrain. He was the founder and chairman of the board of the Bahrain Specialist Hospital, an active member of the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry, one of the founders of the Bank of Bahrain and Kuwait in 1971, and the founder of Abdulrahman Al Zayani and Sons in 1947.

His Majesty the King awarded Rashid Al Zayani the Order of Bahrain, First Class, in recognition of his continuous and distinguished service to the nation and its citizens.

Life and Career

  1. Born in 1912 in the city of Muharraq.

  2. Completed the first stage of his education at Al Hidaya Al Khalifia School.

  3. Was one of the members of the Bahraini educational mission abroad.

  5. After returning to Bahrain, he worked as a teacher.

  6. He then worked for seven (7) years in the office of the adviser Charles Belgrave.

  7. Founded Abdulrahman Al Zayani and Sons in 1947.

  8. Took part in founding the Bank of Bahrain and Kuwait in 1971.

  9. Served as chairman of the board of the Bank of Bahrain and Kuwait until the mid-1990s.

  10. Was a member of the Constituent Assembly that drafted the constitution in 1973.

  11. Was a member of the Shura Council for its first two consecutive terms, starting in 1992.

  12. Founded the Bahrain Specialist Hospital and chaired its board of directors.

  13. Held a distinguished record of achievements in the trade and business sector.

  14. Was a former member of the board of the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

  15. Contributed to many charitable projects and works inside the Kingdom and abroad.

  16. Was known for helping the poor and those in need and for building mosques, including the rebuilding and expansion of Sheikh Abdulwahab Al Zayani Mosque in Muharraq.

  17. His last charitable work was the establishment of the Rashid Abdulrahman Al Zayani Mabara, with a paid-up capital of half a million Bahraini dinars.

  18. His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa awarded him the Order of Bahrain, First Class, in recognition of his efforts in the service of the nation.

  19. He had three (3) sons (Khalid, Hamed and Zayed) as well as six (6) daughters, after the passing of his fourth son, may God have mercy on him.
